Dinghy
The Squib keelboat class is one of the fastest growing fleets in the UK and Ireland, which is surprising when you consider the fact that it was designed in the late 60's. Anybody from 8 to 80, regardless of ability, can sail these boats. The attraction of the fleet is due to its strict one design rules, it's robust seaworthiness, it's stability, and, most importantly, it's affordability. 2010 will see the UK Nationals hosted in Dublin.
The squib fleet in Mayo Sailing Club is in it's early stages, but intends to expand in 2010. General feedback from those who have raced them is very positive. Indications are that there may be 5 squibs on the startline for 2010. The more the merrier. A good club racing Squib can cost between 2000 and 5000 euro which is not bad in these times. Championship winning Squibs can be bought for between 5000 and 10000 euro's. Incredibly, older boats numbered between 11 and 150 are much sought after because they are still winning major events
Squib racing will be listed in the MSC programme of events which will set the Squib start time as being 10 minutes after the last Cruiser start for all events.
The intention is to sail Olympic and / or Windward Leeward courses. Scoring will be Scratch and maybe Echo. If anyone wants to give it a try, then give us a shout because we hope to sail on Tuesday nights as well.
For all you need to know about squibs, see www.nsoa.co.uk or contact any of the squib owners sailors.
