Junior Sailing Course Selection
Mayo Sailing Club Junior Sailing Course Selection
New Syllabus.
The ISA has revised the syllabus for the Small Boat Sailing Scheme (SBSS), which was implemented by participating clubs in 2009. For detailed information, please refer to www.sailing.ie.
In the revised syllabus prior ‘Levels 1 & 2 remain basically the same and are covered within the Start sailing & Basic skills modules .
The Improving skills module is quite different to the old scheme. A lot of skills were taken out and replaced with specialist modules. Consequently there are quite a few extra modules to choose from at the upper end of the scheme. These are:
- Advanced Boat Handling (ABH).
- Adventure 1 & 2.
- Racing 1 & 2 (GR1).
- Kites & Wires. 1 and 2
In this summer’s course we will be providing two (and perhaps more) of the above modules:
- ABH and R1, K&W 1 and possibly Adventure 1
Trainees must cover two modules in this ring before they move to the outer ring of the scheme. Usually these courses / modules would be ABH + R1 or ABH + K&W1, or ABH + Adventure 1.
Then depending on the courses completed a student can progress in the following manner
Those having completed ABH + R1 can do R2 or Adventure 1 (2 when 1 is completed), K&W1 (2 when 1 is completed)
We recommend the following:
| LEVEL PASSED IN 2009 | LEVEL TO APPLY FOR 2010 |
| Start sailing | Basic Skills |
| Basic Skills | Improving Skills |
| Improving skills | ABH& Go Racing 1 (GR1) |
| ABH + Go Racing 1 (GR1) | K&W 1 depends on demand and instructor availability. |
