b. Membership is required to comply as an ISA training centre, our insurance and Safety obligations.

c. All instructors are qualified and experienced sailors.

d. A strict safety ratio of juniors to instructors and safety boats is maintained on and off the water.

Boat Requirements

Everyone has to have access to a boat. So you need your own boat or a share in a two-person boat. The parents are responsible in making sure the boat they supply is in good repair for the full duration of the course.

a. All boats have to be maintained in a safe condition before they are let on the water.

b. Boats have to have a launching trolley.

c. Boats must be fully insured against 3rd party and public liability claims before they can be used on the course.

d. In the event of any damage on the water both parties must take responsibility for repairs and have the boats ready to continue the course.

a. For Start Sailing, Basic skills and improving skills we recommend Laser Pico, Mirrors, RS Tera, Toppers, Topaz, RS Feva or Optimist.

b. For advanced modules we suggest RS Feva, Toppers, Topaz, Lasers, laser 2 or 420 and for Kites and Wires modules boats must be able to support use of trapeize and spinnakers.

c. All advanced module participants must have their own boats or a boat to share if using a two-man boat .

d. A limited number of club Mirrors are available for use on the courses. However this service is only available for people participating in Start sailing and Basic skills modules who do not have access to their own boat. Rates are at a charge of €50/week per sailor. This is allocated on a first come first served basis.

e. Mayo Sailing Club accepts no responsibility for loss, damage or personal injury arising from participation on the courses.

Sailing Equipment and Clothing requirements

· All sailors must have a sailing buoyancy aid type of life jacket.

· All sailors must have suitable water wear i.e. wetsuits, sailing booties (not sandals) and wind & rain protection gear.

· All "start sailing" sailors must undertake a ‘out of your depth’ sea water swim before you can take sailing instruction. This will take place on the Sunday of registration on June 10. You will receive notification again closer to this date.

Age requirements etc

· You must be a minimum age to gain sailing modules. Introductory sailing starting age 9 up.

· Often boat handling experience takes longer to acquire than theory.

· It is normal for levels more advanced modules to take two years or more work to meet the appropriate skill level that depends on the practical competency of the sailor getting to grips with the skill set for that module.

· Once sufficient modules have been reached sailors can learn to instruct in the MSC also and pass on this practical and enjoyable life skill to others.
